ST. PETERSBURG, FL (January 11, 2015) -- In a new collaboration, the University of South Florida St. Petersburg and the Tampa Bay Rowdies have entered into an agreement to upgrade the University’s practice soccer field located at 3rd Street, South, between 5th and 6th Avenues.
The field has long been used by USFSP’s intramural sports teams. Under the agreement, the Rowdies will improve and maintain the field to professional standards, and its players will also have access to the field for practice. The two parties will share the cost of improving the site.
In a statement, Regional Chancellor Sophia Wisniewska said, “This latest collaboration with the Rowdies underscores our commitment to student success, building the University’s infrastructure, and engaging in strategic partnerships that serve both our students and the community. Thanks to this partnership, we can fast-track a project that would have taken much longer to bring to fruition.”
Rowdies principal owner Bill Edwards added, “We are very proud of our continuing collaboration with USF St. Pete. The field improvements are a win-win for the club and the students, and an example of the Rowdies’ ongoing commitment to build community partnerships that benefit everyone involved.”
The University anticipates that improvements to the field will be completed by February 1.
The Rowdies will open the 2015 season with a match up against the San Antonio Scorpions, the 2014 Soccer Bowl Champions, in San Antonio April 4. The home opener follows on April 11 against Minnesota United FC, the team with the best overall 2014 record and the defending Spring champion. Fans will enjoy all the action at the newly-renovated Al Lang Stadium, complete with larger pitch, new seating, improved concessions and more.
